Global Science & Technology, Inc. (GST), a growing scientific and high technology company, is seeking a Junior Programmer to support NOAAs Satellite Oceanography and Climatology Division (SOCD). The position is located in College Park, MD.

Position Summary:

This GST position is for a support programmer at NOAAs Satellite Oceanography and Climatology Division (SOCD).  The Junior Programmer will support the development and maintenance of the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Ocean Products System (SAROPS).  SAROPS is an integrated system for the processing of SAR imagery into products (e.g., Ocean Surface Winds Speed, Sea Ice Delineation and Characterization, Oil Spill Identification). In addition, he/she will work with the Coast Watch team in to perform planning for current and expected data, monitor product generation and apply corrective measures for unforeseen events (NFS failures, extended data outages, etc.).  

Primary Duties:

  • Work with the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Ocean Products System (SAROPS) to update old code and add new code
  • Work with the Coast Watch team to plan for current and expected data, monitor product generation and apply corrective measures for unforeseen events (NFS failures, extended data outages, etc.).  Codes will be written to help the processes described above

Required Education/Skills:

  • A recent Bachelors of Science graduate in Computer Science or other highly technical field.
  • Demonstrated ability to program in one or more of the following languages: MATLAB, IDL, Python, Unix/Linux shell scripting languages (e.g., bash).  Ability in languages like Java, C, C++ will be strongly considered
  • Ability to develop tools for data management monitoring
  • Strong ability to work in Linux

Desired Skills:

  • Ability to think of creative solutions to programming problems
  • Ability to work in a group

Physical Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to use a computer.

Mental Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to think on ones feet and produce creative solutions to challenging technical problems

U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residency is required.
