Global Science & Technology, a growing scientific and high technology firm, is seeking an experienced Senior Scientist to support a major NOAA contract located in College Park, MD.

Project Overview:

This work is to be performed on a NOAA Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) contract, managed by the STAR Satellite Oceanography and Climatology Division. This task will support development of satellite Sea-surface Salinity (SSS) Science Team efforts within STAR.

Position Description:

Operational satellite ocean data assimilation is targeted for implementation at the National Weather Service's (NWS) Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) in CY 2018. EMC, in conjunction with the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) is concurrently developing its next-generation ocean data assimilation capability, known as Marine-JEDI (Joint Effort for Data Assimilation Integration).  The technical focus of this effort is developing Marine-JEDI Unified Forward Operators (UFO) for various satellite observation parameters.  The Marine-JEDI architecture aims at radiance assimilation (Level-1 data), where possible; therefore, this effort focuses on leveraging NESDIS/STAR expertise to develop the geophysical parameter extractions for the Marine-JEDI UFOs being developed by the JCSDA SOCA (Sea-ice, Ocean, Coupled Assimilation) team.  These geophysical parameter physics will be implemented in conjunction with the relevant instruments within the operational Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM).  Within this context, L-band satellite sea surface salinity (SSS) observations from National Aeronautics and Space Agency's (NASA) Soil Moisture Active-Passive (SMAP) mission and the European Space Agency's Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission are the initial targets for assimilation.  Appropriate quality assurance/control (QA/QC) of the satellite SSS data also will need to be established.  The technical direction for satellite ocean data assimilation applications extends to various ocean data streams relevant to coupled ocean-atmosphere-sea ice data assimilation and modeling, to include Level-2 data acquisition, QA/QC, and assimilation of satellite sea-ice thickness (SIT) data from the SMAP, SMOS, and Cryosat-2 missions, as well as optically-based sea-ice products (thickness, concentration, ice-surface temperature, ice vector motion) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sea-ice data (concentration, ice vector motion).

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Senior level with discipline appropriate Ph.D. (Oceanography, Atmospheric Physics, etc.) and significant expertise in satellite sensor-specific expertise and data exploitation.
  • Experience with processing, reformatting, and interpretation of at least some of the relevant listed datasets and their use in development of remote sensing products and/or applications is essential.
  • Current knowledge of trends in satellite based retrievals of sea surface salinity
  • Working experience with CRTM or equivalent.

Desired Experience/Skills:

  • A working knowledge and application of FORTRAN/Python and shell scripting is strongly preferred along with  experience in geophysical analysis and a science programming language (e.g., IDL, MATLAB).
  • Working experience in satellite data processing and data formats. Programming in FORTRAN/Python is strongly preferred.

Physical Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to use a computer.

Mental Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to think analytically and mathematically and transfer this to programs/code.
  • Ability to work with other staff members within and outside the SSS group.

U.S. citizenship or Permanent Resident (Green Card holder) is highly desired.

Selected applicants will be subject to a government background investigation.
