Global Science & Technology, a growing scientific and high technology firm, is seeking an experienced Systems Administrator/Architect to support a major NOAA contract located in College Park, MD as a consultant. Work includes migration of data from metadata servers and storage servers from old hardware to new hardware in BEEGFS (FHGFS) file system with minimal interruption to ongoing data processing without any storage data loss. 


The SSA/Architect will work with a group of scientists and programmers at the Satellite Oceanography and Climatology Division (SOCD) under the NOAA Center for Satellite Applications and Research. The position is for a consultant and the initial job will rely on the applicant having excellent skills in installation and management of parallel file systems, batch job queuing, Storage Area Networks, all in a Linux/Unix environment. The SSA/Architect will set up the various clusters that will be used for processing science data. Once the computational environment is stable, the SSA/Architect will provide step-by-step documentation, or tutorials of all work performed to personnel within the group. 

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • B.S. degree (MS degree preferred) in Systems Engineering, Systems Architecture, Parallel Processing and Programming and 10 years of professional IT experience. Appropriate years of relevant experience can substitute for degree
  • 10 years plus experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • 5 years of systems administration and/or architecture experience
  • An ability to understand scientific software and the ability to work with scientists and scientific programmers to implement software in a high performance computing environment
  • Programming knowledge in FORTRAN (or other programming languages), MPI, Open MP, and OpenACC
  • Advanced knowledge of shell-scripting
  • Teamwork, strong inter-personal skills

Desired Skills: 

  • Experience with installation and management of parallel (cluster) file systems (especially BEEGFS(FHGFS)) will be a viewed positively
  • Experience of batch job queuing system, e.g., qsub will be a plus
  • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification
  • Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA) certification
  • Large Storage Area Network (SAN) experience
  • Infiniband (Mellanox) network hardware/software experience
  • Knowledge of GPU technology in a high performance computing environment
  • Knowledge of satellite & oceanographic data, systems, and analyses beneficial (but not required) 

  Physical Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to use a computer. 

Mental Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to work with other staff members within and outside the SOCD group. 

U.S. citizenship is required. 

Possession of a security clearance as a system administrator on NOAA systems is very strongly preferred, otherwise candidate must be able to pass appropriate national security checks in order to perform this job.
