Global Science & Technology, Inc. (GST), a growing scientific and high technology company, is seeking a Systems Engineer to support NOAA's National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI).  The position is located in Asheville, NC. 

Position Summary:

GST is working with NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) and Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) to establish the Mission Science Network (MSN). The short-term goal of the MSN Program is consolidation of IT infrastructure within NCEI and STAR. The long-term goal is development of shared computing services that will support the missions of both organizations and enable a future migration to the cloud.

We are looking for an experienced systems engineer to provide systems engineering technical services for development of the MSN system and subsystems. The systems engineer will be a member of the MSN Systems Engineering team, and will work closely with the GST Subtask Lead to ensure the work is aligned to the government vision. 

Primary Duties:

  • Engage relevant MSN, NCEI, and STAR staff to define, document, and communicate use cases, requirements, architecture, and design of the MSN system and its subsystems.
  • Participate in peer reviews of system engineering work products.
  • Support milestone reviews for the MSN System and its subsystems; these reviews may include System Requirements Review (SRR), Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR), and Operational Readiness Review (ORR).
  • Ensure that problems found during reviews are addressed and tracked to closure.
  • Develop and present technical overviews, status, and proposals to the MSN team.
  • Identify and elevate risks and technical issues as they are identified. 
  • Assist with preparation of weekly and month status reports. 

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, a Physical Science or Data Science, and 8+ years combined experience in software-intensive systems engineering in large scale government, scientific, or engineering computing environments.
  • Experience working in Unix/Linux environments.
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and directed with keen attention to detail.
  • Proven analytical and creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work in a geographically dispersed organization. 

Physical Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to use a computer. 

Mental Qualification(s) Required:

  • Must be able to effectively communicate technical information (written and verbal) and work status accurately and reliably to project leads and managers. 

U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residency is required.
