Global Science & Technology, Inc., a fast growing scientific and high technology firm, is seeking a Research Scientist to support the NOAA NESDIS/STAR program.  The position is located in College Park, MD.

Position Summary:

The Research Scientist is needed to help on developing end-to-end RO data inversion for both the past and newly available RO missions. The Research Scientist is expected to participate in studies to use satellite data to quantify the uncertainty of Global Positioning System (GPS) radio occultation COSMIC-2 refractivity, bending angle, temperature, and water vapor profiles specifically focusing on mid- and lower-troposphere. The Research Scientist will also need to provide scientific and technical support for research on various issues on the numerical weather prediction research using GPS RO data at all the vertical levels for each individual RO profile and analyze the RO data and data quality below super-refraction.


  • Develop an end-to-end processing system converting Radio Occultation (RO) raw data in the L-band phase and amplitude to bending angle, to atmospheric refractivity and further to atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles
  • Characterize the uncertainty of bending angle or refractivity through local power spectral analysis and quantify the error sources from calibration and retrieval process
  • Determine new approach and methods to use for RO data for atmospheric modeling  
  • Analyze and test various RO measurements to provide a wide variety of information to resolve complex atmospheric phenomenon  
  • Provide helps on Operations Exploitation Subject to approval of specific tasks, algorithms are improved or extended to enable extended science application 

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Remote Sensing or related fields and 5 years minimum of professional experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Five years of experience in GNSS data
  • Five years of experience in GNSS and/or radio occultation science and technology.
  • Some experience in infrared and/or microwave satellite data.
  • Five years of experience of data assimilation and numerical weather prediction.
