Global Science & Technology, Inc., a fast growing scientific and high technology firm, is seeking a Senior Scientific Imagery Analyst/Web Designer support the NOAA NESDIS/STAR program.  The position is located in College Park, MD.

Position Summary:

The Senior Scientific Imagery Analyst/Web Designer will primarily work on the Visible-Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Sensor Data Records (SDR) as a member of the NOAA/NESDIS/STAR VIIRS SDR team.  VIIRS is an imaging radiometer with spatial resolutions of 750 and 375 meters covering 0.4 to 12.1 um spectral range, as well as a panchromatic Day/Night band, onboard Suomi NPP and NOAA-20/JPSS satellites.  The VIIRS SDR team has the responsibility ensuring the high quality geo-located and calibrated radiometric data, aka, the sensor data record (SDR).  The candidate will perform analysis of VIIRS imagery data for quality assurance, monitoring instrument performance using various techniques, support anomaly investigation, image preparation for presentations for meetings and conferences, as well as disseminating VIIRS calibration/validation information on the web.  The candidate will also develop and maintaining dynamic web contents using such languages as PHP, JavaScript, and html.

Primary Duties:

  • Perform image quality/artifact assessments regularly on the VIIRS sensor data records using COTS software such as ENVI.
  • Provide timely response to anomaly investigations by collecting and analyzing anomalous samples from VIIRS.
  • Provide rapid response to major global events observed by VIIRS using specific data sets.
  • Perform routine monitoring of VIIRS radiometric and geolocation performance using web based calibration/validation tools, including but not limited to: monitoring over vicarious sites, and geolocation accuracy monitoring.
  • Perform satellite orbital analysis and animation using COTS tools such as the Satellite Toolkit.
  • Maintain and expand the VIIRS SDR calibration/validation website with dynamic content, and integrate it with the Enterprise ICVS which consists of JPSS, GOES-R, Radio Occultation, and other programs.
  • Support the VIIRS SDR team in data collection, data processing, image analysis, web based system integration, data quality control inspection.
  • Provide high quality imagery, and animation for visualization, presentation, and reporting; generate 3d/2d instrument/observation geometry graphic drawings to support the team for journal publications and dissemination of VIIRS information.
  • Organize team meetings and presentation materials using web based communication tools.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Master's degree in Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems, Web and Graphic design, or Earth Science related field, and a minimum of 6 years of professional experience analyzing satellite imagery data, and maintaining web based systems. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Extensive experience in analyzing satellite imagery with ENVI (or equivalent).
  • Experience in satellite orbital analysis using Satellite Toolkit (STK) (or equivalent) with two-line-elements (TLEs), including but not limited to: orbital predictions, scenario animations.
  • Experience working in Linux and windows environment.
  • Software skills: ENVI, STK, PHP, CSS, JavaScript, GIMP, Panoplay, 3D design software such as Sketchup or Blender.
  • Data formats: HDF5, netCDF, as well as common graphic formats such as animated GIF, PNG, JPG.

Desired Experience/Skills:

  • Extensive hands-on experience using ENVI in analyzing satellite images for quality assurance and anomaly investigation; ability to handle very large volume datasets.
  • Extensive experience in the development and maintenance of dynamic web sites using PHP and JavaScript with MySQL backend server.
  • Experience with satellite orbital analysis tools such as STK.
  • Experience with satellite imagery radiometric and geolocation long term performance monitoring.
  • Excellent skills with Microsoft Office packages including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with others as a team.
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment.  

Physical Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to use a computer.  

Mental Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to think on one's feet.  

U.S. citizenship or Permanent Resident (Green Card holder) is required.
