Global Science & Technology, Inc., a fast growing scientific and high technology firm, is seeking a Research Assistant to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Information's (NCEI).  The position is located in Asheville, NC.

Position Summary:

The successful applicant will provide support to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Information's (NCEI) Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN) data suite through assessment of data set ingest protocols, processes, and configurations and trouble-shooting and resolving ingest and format failures.  Applicant will establish Submission Agreements (SA) for additional data sources that follow NCEI ingest protocols, coordinate SAs for one-time archive requests of historic, static sub-daily data sets, coordinate with IT to set up server configurations and change requests, unify and reformat input data sets, assess and enhance quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) protocols, and respond to customer questions that require data set expertise.

Primary Duties:

  • Ensure regular and accurate ingest of upstream GHCN data set input data streams: (1) Unify data formats to align with input requirements, (2) Troubleshoot and resolve ingest failures, (3) Reformat input data sets as needed, (3) Support data set merging and provide duplication checking and removal, and (4) Provide QA/QC testing as needed to ensure integrity and continuity
  • Support new input data sources: (1) Prepare Submission Agreements (SA), (2) Work with Ops and IT Branches to set up ingest streams and configurations that follow NCEI protocol, and (3) Coordinate SAs for one-time archive requests of historic, static sub-daily data sets
  • Interface with NOAA NCEI Center for Weather and Climate (CWC) scientists to understand and enhance ingest processes
  • Provide documentation of code iterations and processes modifications
  • Respond to user questions as needed

 Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Science and a minimum of 2 years of professional experience.  Master's degree preferred.
  • Proficiency in compiled, functional and imperative, as well as object oriented languages
  • Ability to work in Linux and Microsoft operating systems, including experience with config and cron protocols
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills
  • Ability to use Microsoft suite products (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Google suite products (e.g. Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google slides, etc.)
  • Knowledge of NCEI's GHCN data set

 Desired Skills:

  • Strong computer programming knowledge and demonstrated experience; scientific based applications are a plus
  • A broad understanding of NOAA's weather station platforms and sensors is advantageous.
  • Environmental science background is advantageous 

Physical Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to use a computer. 

Mental Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to think on one's feet. 

U.S. citizenship or Permanent Resident (Green Card holder) is required.
