Global Science & Technology, Inc., a fast growing scientific and high technology firm, is seeking a Scientific Programmer to support the NOAA STAR program.  The position is located in College Park, MD. 

Position Summary:

The Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) is NOAA's premiere research office for developing the satellite algorithms needed to transform satellite observations to environmental measurements.  Seeking a Scientific Programmer to support STAR's efforts to assess the impact of future, emerging and contemporary satellite-derived observations on environmental data products and numerical models.

Duties:

  • Enhance the processing, manipulation, visualization, analysis, or interpretation of environmental data (all sorts of environmental data, including from satellites)
  • Responsible for software testing, integration, maintenance, documentation, quality, and compliance standards
  • Work on NOAA systems and testing impacts of software changes on their performance and skills
  • Develop accurate, effective, and efficient computational strategies for exploiting environmental observations and converting into standard data formats
  • Exploit new numerical approaches, such as machine learning, for developing more efficient codes
  • Troubleshoot and debug existing and newly developed software
  • Contribute to software development reviews

 Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree (MS preferred) in Computer Science or related field. Additional familiarity with Earth Science, Physical Science, or related field with emphasis in remote sensing or equivalent, is a plus. An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related work experience
  • Experience in writing computer code for modeling physical systems
  • Scientific programming experience with Keras, Tensorflow, Python preferred but alternatively, previous experience with IDL, MATLAB, and/or FORTRAN also acceptable
  • Some practical application of computing and scripting languages
  • Demonstrated experience in developing visually appealing visualization tools (for 2D fields, maps, 3D illustrations, etc.)
  • Knowledge of common satellite data and numerical model formats, such as NetCDF, HDF, BUFR, and GRIB, etc.
  • Experience in satellite remote sensing and analyses of large environmental satellite data sets with a preference for meteorology, oceanography, atmospheric physics, or related field.
  • The candidate must be able to provide examples of authored code and completed projects.
  • A demonstrated ability to work effectively with others
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Able to collaborate effectively with other team members to meet deadlines
  • Strong desire to learn and work in a science environment

 Desired Experience/Skills:

  • Experience with data science
  • Previous NOAA experience

Physical Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to use a computer

 Mental Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to think on one's feet
