Global Science & Technology, a growing scientific and high-technology firm, is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to support the NOAA NWS Satellite Readiness Support Services Contract located in Silver Spring, MD.

Position Summary:

The Senior Systems Engineer will be responsible for providing overall requirements support to the client. The candidate will provide programmable software support in support of NWS.

Primary Duties:

  • Conduct remote sensing using satellite instruments
  • Conduct requirement support
  • Conduct environmental data processing/distribution
  • Conduct data-transfer protocols such as LDM and the FTP family
  • Conduct application design and document software dependencies

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • B.S. degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline, with 20 years of professional experience. Appropriate years of relevant experience can substitute for degree.
  • Experience with environmental satellite and other observational remote sensing
  • Experience with AWIPS programming/configuration/use skills/experience and testing of AWIPS software applications such as meteorological data decoding and display systems
  • Experience with environmental weather satellites (e.g., GOES and POES, but preferably others as well)
  • Experience with software programming (including at least Python, Python add-on libraries/packages, javascript, XML, json, Linux shell script and C++)
  • Experience with VLab's enterprise web portal, with development, collaboration/integration services, software-building utilities, version control systems, code review and documentation tools such as Git, Gerrit, Jenkins, Redmine and LifeRay
  • Experience with Anaconda/miniconda (package management utilities)
  • Familiarity with satellite data formatting/storage standards such as netCDF, FITS, ISO metadata, Climate and Forecast conventions for metadata
  • Experience/training and/or familiarity with hydrometeorological measurements, data, units and representation
  • Experience in using Linux (preferably Red Hat) tools, utilities (e.g., cron), and shell commands and scripts
  • Experience with archiving utilities (e.g., tar), compression utilities (e.g., gzip)
  • Familiarity or experience with messaging software, such as RabbitMQ
  • Experience with systems and software engineering
  • Experience with software development lifecycle
  • Experience with Java, Eclipse RCP, Eclipse plugins, Spring, Apache Camel, Hibernate, JMS, XML, SQL
  • Knowledge of system and application security policies

Desired Experience/Skills:

  • Prior NOAA experience

  • Ability to multitask.

U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is highly desirable.
