Global Science & Technology, Inc. (GST), a growing scientific and high technology company, seeks an experienced Senior Scientist to support the satellite Sea-Surface Salinity (SSS) Science Team at NOAA STAR.  Position is located in College Park, MD.

Position Summary:

The Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) Science Team pursues exploitation of L-band (1.4 GHz) passive microwave measurements, acquired from different observing technologies, for SSS retrievals, Due to the maturity of satellite SSS retrievals, numerous research and development opportunities exist and are needed for operationally exploiting these observations.  Getting the non-NOAA SSS data streams included within the NESDIS operational common ground system will be pursued.  Further, given that satellite SSS observations address a critical and poorly-constrained ocean state parameter, the assimilation of SSS data into NOAA operational modeling is a priority objective of the SSS Science Team.

Primary Duties:

  • Research and development of methods for exploiting L-band (1.4 GHz) passive microwave measurements acquired from different observing technologies , e.g. the European Space Agency's (ESA) Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission and the National Aeronautics and Space Agency's (NASA) Soil Moisture Active-Passive (SMAP) mission, for SSS retrievals,
  • Operational assimilation of Level-2 SSS data for NOAA's operational global models and the regional West Coast Operational Forecast System (WCOFS)
  • Research and development of Ecosystem applications of satellite SSS including support for ocean acidification, salinity fusion products and locating and characterizing domains relevant to frontal food webs and species, e.g., for fisheries.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Computer Science, and/or other Physical Sciences and Engineering with 10 years or more in satellite sensor-specific expertise and data exploitation.
  • Experience with numerical ocean models including salinity-dependent dynamics of air-sea coupling
  • Experience running ocean models ideally in a supercomputing environment
  • Experience with HYCOM and MOM4 global ocean models and ocean data assimilation methods
  • Experience with processing, reformatting, and interpretation of at least some of the relevant listed datasets and their use in development of remote sensing products and/or applications is essential.
  • A working scientific knowledge and application of FORTRAN/Python and shell scripting is preferred along with experience in geophysical analysis and a science programming language (e.g., IDL, MATLAB).
  • Experience in operational assimilation of satellite data
  • Experience developing satellite data products or applications
  • Experience with L-band (1.4 GHz) passive microwave measurements , the European Space Agency's (ESA) Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission and the National Aeronautics and Space Agency's (NASA) Soil Moisture Active-Passive (SMAP) mission a plus.

Physical Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to use a computer.

Mental Qualification(s) Required:

  • Ability to think on one's feet.

U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residency is required.

Selected applicants will be required to complete a federal government background investigation.
